![]() Teams skipped by Reece Hamm, and Dayna Wahl won last weekend's MJCT Spiel in Morris, held as the first Canadian curling event since COVID-19 postponed the sports world. "This is the postponed spring event cancelled in March," said Lorne Hamblin, co-Manager of the Cargill Curling Training Centre with partner Chris Hamblin. "Throughout May, June, with the [MJCT] and Curling Canada, Curl Manitoba, to put together the protocols to get everyone back to playing the sport we love." "We operate under the Manitoba Health guidelines," Hamblin continued. "It was very much a work in progress, but we appreciate all the help we got, and we're delighted to see all the teams here this weekend doing what they do best but under the return to play guidelines." Hamm, with third Jayden Rutter, second Zach McKeigan and lead Graham Normand won 7-2 over Jace Freeman to win the 8-team men's event. The women's featured three teams playing for the title, with Dayna Wahl and her team of Anna Ginters, Gillian Hildebrand and Piper Stoesz winning 6-5 in an extra end over Cassandra Stobbe. "It feels great to be back after a little hiatus," said Matthew Bijl, skip of Team Bijl, dropping a 9-3 decision to Hamm in the semifinals. "It's something to get used to, cause now we only have one sweeper. Can't sweep the opposing rocks behind the teeline, so it's something to get used to, that's for sure." "We know we're in good hands here. We're just going to go out there and curl and follow the guidelines and everything that was told to us and should be good." "Our number one factor was the safety of the athletes. I did all the registrations outside the facility. Once they have all the paperwork in place, they came inside." "We have sanitization inside the building and regular cleaning of the facility. We have assigned tables setup 11 feet apart, five downstairs and five upstairs." "For this event, we didn't open our canteen, we didn't open our own bar." "We're running our fall MJCT event on September 11, 12 and 13 and the big one, the DEKALB Superspiel on November 27-30. We're getting very close to full entry with a lot of interest from Canadian teams." "It's just exciting to have curling again." We certainly echo that. Happy to have curling back again. |
