Andrin Schnider Wins Schweizer Cup

It took extra time for Andrin Schnider (Schaffhausen) to claim the Schweizer Cup Gold medal, out-drawing Yannick Schwaller (Bern) to win the special Swiss championship event, hosted by Swiss Curling.

For Schnider, ranked 70th on the World Curling Federation World Team Rankings at the end of last season, the win is the next evolution as they continue to work on rising through the curling ranks.

After being held to a single point in the eighth end, Schnider put his draw side of the button setting the stage for Schwaller, who came just short, finishing in the top four-foot.

"We fought hard to stay in the game, " said Schnider, on falling behind early in the game. "I'm proud of the team and how everyone pulled together after the first two ends."

After getting the first-end force, Schnider had a nearly disastrous second end, resulting in a steal of three to Schwaller and an early 4-0 deficit.

"Two in the fourth end, followed by the steal in the sixth end put us right back in the game, " added Schnider.

The team came together three years ago, after Schnider (23 years old) and second Nicola Stoll (23) graduated from juniors, adding the experience of third Oliver Widmer (25) and lead Fabian Schmid (29).

"We are aiming for the top of Switzerland and therefore the world of course," added Stoll.

"But that's the longterm view. Right now our short to mid-term goal is Top 3 in Switzerland and Top 40 in the world."

In the Bronze medal game, Jan Hess (Zug) trailed 6-2 in the seventh end to Jan Klossner (Lausanne-Basel), going on to score four, then stealing eighth end to win 7-6 and finish on the podium.

In Sunday's semifinals, Schnider won 6-3 over Klossner, scoring three in the seventh end to break open the game, while Schwaller scored five in the fifth end en-route to a 9-3 win over Hess.

Next up for the teams in the Baden Masters, held next weekend as the first Tour event of the season. Normally a 20-team event, a number of Norwegian and Scottish teams have withdrawn due to increased travel restrictions, leaving the event in flux at this time.
