Gushue edges Koe in an instant classic at the Trials
![]() Brad Gushue (Photo: Curling Canada) picked up his second win at the Montana's Canadian Curling Trials against Kevin Koe in Halifax, N.S, Nov. 23. By Meredith McCullum St. John's N.L.'s Brad Gushue curled 99%, with a packed Atlantic Canada crowd cheering for every made shot. Gushue held control most of the game, but Koe's sharpshooting refused to let the game open up with a big end. "That was a 2016-2017 Gushue vs. Koe matchup. It was fun to be part of, but man, oh man, it was frustrating," said Gushue after the game. "I felt like we were applying pressure and Kevin was just getting pistol after pistol. It was a remarkable game. It was a lot of fun to be part of and I'm glad we came out on top." Playing alongside teammates Mark Nichols, Brendan Bottcher and Geoff Walker, Gushue started with hammer as the teams traded singles in the first two ends. Gushue scored blanked the third end then picked up another point in the fourth to go up 2-1. Koe, backed by Tyler Tardi, Aaron Sluchinski and Karrick Martin, blanked again in the fifth before tying the game 2-2 in the sixth, followed by another blank in seven. In the eighth, Gushue finally broke through with a multiple score, putting two more points on the board to go up 4-2. The teams traded singles in nine and ten, giving Gushue the 5-3 victory to go 2-0 at the Trials in Halifax. "I could not ask for anything more after two games, but I also don't want to get too excited because it is just two games," said Gushue, on his team's start. "I like how we're playing, I like how we're communicating, our draw weight's good. Mark's throwing as good as I've seen him throw it all year, Brendan's throwing it great, so we're in a good position." Next up Gushue faces John Epping (1-1) at 9 a.m. AST and Matt Dunstone (2-0) at 7 p.m. AST on Nov. 24. "It's really going to come down to whoever plays well," said Gushue on his upcoming matchups. "Right now, at this point, we're just trying to get into the playoffs and that's our main focus." In other draw 3 action, Brad Jacobs beat Rylan Kleiter 6-4 in an extra end, Matt Dunstone beat Jordon McDonald 8-4 and John Epping beat Mike McEwen 9-5. The women play their third draw of the week tonight at 7 p.m. AST, with Corryn Brown facing Kerri Einarson on the TSN feature sheet.
