By: Cameron Sallaj Taking place March 16 to 21 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will decide which team will represent Canada at the 2026 World Mixed Doubles Championship. After day one, many of the favorites are already out in front as all teams now have a game under their belts. One of these teams is one of the only mixed doubles specialist teams in our country in Laura Walker (Sherwood Park, AB) and Kirk Muyres (Muenster, SK). In their opening game, the 2018 world bronze medalists got off to a great start, nabbing three in the first end against Katie Ford and Oliver Campbell, the Ontario champions from Waterloo. Walker/Muyres continued their momentum through the first half, swiping a steal of two to lead 6-1 at the break. Despite this setback, Ford/Campbell stayed in contention with a steal of two of their own in the sixth to tighten the scoreline 6-4. After scoring one in the seventh, the reigning Canadian silver medalists secured a 7-5 win after forcing their oppositions to just one in the eighth end. Coming off a disappointing Olympic Trials which saw them miss the playoffs, Laura Walker and Kirk Muyres are looking to end their season on a high note with a Canadian championship in Summerside. The team has already won all three-color medals from the event and are looking to return to the top of the podium for the first time since 2018. In their next game, Walker/Muyres, with coach Geoff Walker, will play Laura Neil and Scott McDonald (St. Thomas, ON) at 12 pm ET Monday. They will also play Cassandra Spruit and Geoff Spruit (Winchester, ON) later in the day at 6 pm ET. With twelve teams advancing to the knockout round, a 4-3 record at minimum will be needed for a chance at qualification. |
