Jacobs Grabs Gold in Kelowna

Alberta's Brad Jacobs (photo: Curling Canada) defeated Manitoba's Matt Dunstone 5-3 to win the 2025 Montana's Brier in Kelowna, British Columbia.

By Connor Simms,

Brad Jacobs with Marc Kennedy at third, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert on the front end looked to return to the top of the podium in Kelowna.

They took on Manitoba's Matt Dunstone in the final. Dunstone started with the hammer because they were the top seed after winning the 1-2 page playoff game.

The first and fourth ends had a familiar finish, with two thin doubles made on Jacobs' last, resulting in blanks for Dunstone. The third and fourth ends were also not much different, with another blank on the board.

Dunstone cracked the game's first deuce, drawing to the paint heading into the break. Jacobs was forced to their single with a draw to the four foot. Jacobs put a perfectly placed stone on his last, forcing Dunstone to a paper-thin double for a couple. He ended up missing it, giving Jacobs a steal of one.

Dunstone elected to blank the eighth after a heavy Hebert on his first. After a flash on Dunstone's first, they responded with a hit and roll for their single point. Brad controlled the tenth end, making a half a rock pick for three points and the 5-3 victory.

As a team, they curled 94%: Brad was 94%, Marc was 90%, Brett was 95%, and Ben was 98%.

It has been 12 years since Brad won his last Brier, making him the third skip to win 2 Briers separated by a decade. Marc wins his fourth Brier, first since 2016. Brett wins his fifth Brier in eight years and Ben also wins his fifth with his last coming in 2019.

Jacobs was on fire this week with a perfect round robin. Starting round robin with a win over Yukon's Thomas Scoffin 10-3, then broke the record with a 20-2 victory over Northwest Territories Aaron Bartling. They defeated Prince Edward Island's Tyler Smith 10-3, and Saskatchewan's Rylan Kleiter 6-3. They continued their winning streak with wins over Nova Scotia's Owen Purcell 7-3 and Ontario's Sam Mooibroek 11-5. On the final day of round robin they defeated Quebec's Felix Asselin 6-4 and Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen 7-6.

Then, they lost their first game of the event to Team Canada's Brad Gushue. Then, they won four straight to grab the title with wins over Nova Scotia's Owen Purcell, Manitoba's Reid Carruthers, Gushue, and Dunstone.

Team Jacobs will next represent Canada at the 2025 BKT Tires World Men's Curling Championships in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, from March 29 to April 6.

When asked about representing Canada at the World Championships, Brad said, "We're going to play hard to bring back gold for our country." Canada hasn't won gold at the Men's World Championships since the 2017 season, when Brad Gushue's rink won. Brett was part of that Gushue team.
