Lawes dispatches Einarson to stay alive at Western Showdown
![]() Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) downed Kerri Einarson 8-3 to advance in Swift Current. By: Cameron Sallaj After an opening game win on Thursday, Kaitlyn Lawes' Winnipeg foursome dropped consecutive games at the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown to Kayla Skrlik and Satsuki Fujisawa to land themselves in the C bracket. On the brink of elimination, they faced Kerri Einarson in a must win Saturday afternoon. Despite losing the pre-game draw-to-the-button, Lawes and her team of Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin MacCuish were on the board first to open the game, stealing two in the first end after Einarson's runback attempt didn't connect. The four-time Scotties champion was then forced to draw against three on her last rock of the second end to bring the game within one. In trouble again in three, Einarson bailed her lineup of Val Sweeting and Krysten Karwacki out of trouble with a perfect draw on her final stone to setup the steal. Lawes rebounded in four with an open hit to regain a two-point lead. A heavy draw in five gave Einarson only a single point as she tried to claw back into the game. Her efforts would be in vain, however, as another solid end by their opposition allowed Kaitlyn Lawes a takeout for four in the sixth to give them a big 8-3 win on the third day of competition in Swift Current. RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown - Draw 12 - Kerri Einarson vs Kaitlyn Lawes: With the win, Team Lawes now moves into the C qualifiers tonight at 9:00 PM CT where they will take on the United States' Delaney Strouse. A win will put them into Monday's playoff round while a loss will see them eliminated. Currently ranked 13th, a good result for the Lawes rink this week in Swift Current will ensure their position in the remaining Grand Slams of the season as they build towards the national championship in Thunder Bay.
