Mike McEwen (Winnipeg, MB) lost 5-3 to Niklas Edin (Karlstad, SWE) in the Final of the Westjet Players' Championship, held April 11 - 16, 2017 in Toronto, Ontario. To advance to the championship game, McEwen won 5-4 over Brad Gushue (St. John's, NL) in the semifinals of the 2017 Westjet Players' Championship in Toronto, Ontario; and won 4-2 over Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, MB) in the quarterfinals.
McEwen finished 4-1 in the 12-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, McEwen lost 7-2 to Carruthers, then responded with a 8-1 win over Kevin Koe (Calgary, AB). McEwen won 9-4 against John Morris (Vernon, BC), then won 6-4 against Gushue and 7-3 against Brendan Bottcher (Edmonton, AB) in their final qualifying round match.
With their runner-up finish at the Westjet Players' Championship, McEwen take home 61.143 world rankings points along with the $24,000CDN prize, remaining in 4th place overall on the World Ranking Standings with a net gain of 27.909 after improving upon their best so far this season. McEwen ranks 5th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 340.698 points earned so far this season.
