Tony Eberts, then a 32-year-old owner of a glass business in Williams Lake, skipped 20-year-old twin sisters and a 28-year-old schoolteacher to the 1976 title. His team was regarded as one of the best sweeping lineups ever to play in the mixed.
The B.C. team scraped past Saskatchewan legend Garnet Campbell 6-5 in a sudden-death playoff after the teams finished the round robin at the Lethbridge Curling Club with 9-2 records.
Joining Eberts were Elizabeth Short at third and Eleanor Short at lead, both registered nurses, and Clark Glanville. Elizabeth Short later married 1990 world mens champion Rick Folk of Saskatoon and won the 1983 mixed title playing lead for Folk in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Campbell, then a 49-year-old farmer with 10 Brier appearances, was never out of at least a share of the lead in the competition and had defeated Eberts 8-5 early in the round robin by scoring two points in the 10th and stealing three in an extra end.
Saskatchewan held its undefeated position until the fourth round, when Emond, representing Quebec, upended Campbell 8-5. But Manitobas Hal Tanasichuk, who had shared the lead to that point with Campbell, was stunned 9-5 by Eberts, forcing a five-way deadlock for the lead. Three rounds later, Campbell, Tanasichuk, Eberts, Bernie Wylie of Alberta and Ted Brown of Ontario were still tied on top with 5-2 records.
But while Campbell and Eberts each proceeded to win their last four games, the others faltered.
Brown was nipped 7-5 by Metro Penziwol of Northern Ontario but rebounded to win his last three and finish a game off the pace with an 8-3 record.
Tanasichuk lost two of his last four and wound up 7-4, while Wylie lost his last four to finish 5-6, behind Brian Rafuse of Nova Scotia and Wayne Hamilton of Newfoundland, who logged in with 6-5 records.
Emond and Dillon finished 4-7, while Penziwol and Roscoe Wilson of New Brunswick checked in at 3-8. The Territories rep, skipped by Heinz Burki, was dead last at 2-9. |
