Event Information
Glen Pierce and his team of Marlene Neubauer, Fuji Miki and Sharon Bradley finished in a tie with Folk and his Saskatchewan lineup with 9-2 records at the 1982 renewal in Timmins, Ontario. But Pierce was awarded the bye to the championship final on the strength of his round-robin victory over the Saskatchewan outfit. Finishing tied at 7-4, two games back, were Bill Merklinger of Prince Edward Island and Ontario’s Dave Van Dine. Merklinger defeated Van Dine in a tiebreaker, then was hammered 14-5 by Folk in the semi-final. And Saskatchewan led the final showdown 3-2 after three but yielded control in the sixth when Pierce stole a go-ahead single. After Folk tied it in the seventh, Pierce fashioned a killer deuce in the eighth and stole a single in the ninth for a 7-4 victory. B.C. logged in at 10-2, while Saskatchewan was 10-3, P.E.I. was 8-5 and Ontario was 7-5. Wayne Sokolosky of Alberta finished at 6-5, one game in front of Don Ryan of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia’s Steve Ogden, two games in front of Peter Murray of New Brunswick, Tom Pritchard of Quebec, Chucker Ross of Northern Ontario and Manitoba’s Doug Lintott, and five games ahead of the Territories’ Lionel Stokes.
