Event Information
Steve Skillings lost 9-7 in the 1983 semi-final to Folk. But, directing Pat Sanders, Al Carlson and Louise Herlinveaux, he was back to claim B.C.’s last triumph at Toronto’s Bayview Country Club two years later. The champs, who had enjoyed the bye to the playoff final by virtue of a 10-1 round-robin record, hit for three-enders in the third and fifth ends against Dave Jones of Nova Scotia and then hung on through an exciting final four ends, scoring a 10th-end deuce for a 10-8 championship decision. The B.C. team won two straight in the round robin, lost its only decision to Alberta’s Randy Ferbey, then won nine in a row for the title, including a seventh-round 4-2 decision over Nova Scotia. Jones also lost 9-6 to Ernie Rehberg of Manitoba during the round robin and finished a game off the pace with a 9-2 record, duplicated by Manitoba. But the Bluenosers avenged the earlier loss to Rehberg in the semi-final, walloping his troops 8-1. Behind Skillings (11-1), Jones (10-3) and Rehberg (9-3), were Murray Affleck of Northern Ontario (7-4), Gary Lumbard of Ontario (6-5), Norbert MacKinnon of New Brunswick, Don Twa of the Territories and Lloyd Beckett of Saskatchewan (5-6), later-to-be-crowned four-time world champion Ferbey (4-7), Kyrke Nussey of Quebec and John Fortier of Prince Edward Island (3-8) and Kent Blandford of Newfoundland (0-11).
