Krista McCarville (Thunder Bay) claimed Stu Sells Living Waters Collingwood Curling Classic, defeating Hollie Duncan(Woodstock, ON) 6-4 in Sunday's final. By Connor Simms, Krista McCarville(Thunder Bay), with Andrea Kelly at third, Kendra Lilly, Ashley Sippala, and Sarah Potts on the front end, went through the round-robin undefeated to claim the Stu Sells Living Waters Collingwood Classic title. Their five-personal team lineup was missing Potts this weekend, leaving the other four playing every game. McCarville is usually not known for the World Curling Tour (WCT), but she is more known for her Scotties Tournament of Hearts(STOH) appearances. She missed playoffs at the STOH for the first time since returning to competitive curling in 2015, excluding the 2018 final, when she lost to the Northern Ontario Scotties, and the 2021 final, when they declined their invitation to the isolated Scotties. In the final, McCarville faces Woodstock's Hollie Duncan, starting with the hammer advantage due to her qualifying A-side. The scoring started in the second end after an open first end resulted in a blank. In the second end, McCarville made a hack weight hit around a tight guard for two to secure the game's first points. Duncan bounced back in the third end, drawing to the four foot for a deuce of her own. In the fourth end, McCarville could only outcount one of Duncan's stones, conceding a steal of one. An open end in the fifth resulted in McCarville playing an open hit and roll for her single to tie the game at 3-3. Duncan had an opportunity to blank in the sixth end, electing to draw to the eight foot for her single point. McCarville took the first three points in the seventh end, making a one-foot raise to take a 6-4 lead. The eighth end was all McCarville running Duncan out of stones to win the final. McCarville finished 2-0 in the 18-team qualifying round. In their opening game, McCarville defeated Julia Markle (Navan, ON) 10-3, then won 7-5 against Shelley Hardy (Sarnia, ON) in their A-side qualifying match. To advance to the championship game, McCarville won 6-1 over Corrado in the semifinals and 3-1 over Carley Howard (Toronto, ON) in the quarterfinals. McCarville continues to build toward the Northern Ontario Scotties at the end of January in their hometown of Thunder Bay. This was McCarville's third event of the season, qualifying for playoffs in all three, losing the Mother Club Fall Curling Classic final and a quarterfinal finish at the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard. Their next event is December 13-16 at the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, where every game will be available through CurlingZone's YouTube channel. |
