Homan/Bottcher Wins Olympic Trials Berth
Rachel Homan and Brendan Bottcher (photo: Curling Canada) went undefeated through the Canadian Mixed Doubles Olympic Trials Qualifier in Guelph. Bottcher and Homan will now now compete to be Team Canada starting the end of December in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. The Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials will take place at the Queens Emera Centre, featuring a 16-team pooled event where teams will be place in two pools of 8. Six teams will advance to the championship round which will use the same format as the 2024 Scotties and Brier. Homan and Bottcher won 8-1 ver Lauren Wasylkiw and Shane Konings of Unionville, Ontario in the Final. Homan/Bottcher scored two in the first end, then stole two points in the second end and four more in the third end. In the semifinals, Homan/Bottcher defeated Laura Neil/Scott McDonald of St. Thomas, 9-4 and Wasylkiw/Konings defeated Edmonton's Laura Walker/Kirk Muyres 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Homan/Bottcher defeated Sherry Just/Kyle Cherpin (Prince Albert, SK) 9-2, while Neil/McDonald defeated Val Sweeting/Marc Kennedy (Edmonton, AB) 8-3, Walker/Muyres defeated Mikaylah Lyburn/William Lyburn (Winnipeg, MB) 7-6, and Wasylkiw/Konings defeated Jessica Zheng/Victor Pietrangelo (Niagara Falls, ON) 7-6 Homan/Bottcher qualified for the playoffs through the A-event in the 25-team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Homan/Bottcher defeated Amelie Maheux/David Maheux (St-Bruno, QC) 8-6, then won 11-4 against Riley Sandham/Brendan Craig (Guelph, ON) to advance to the A-Qualifier where they won 5-3 over Neil/McDonald to advance to the playoff round. |
