![]() Sudbury's John Epping won 5-2 over Winnipeg's Braden Calverty on Monday morning. Epping with Jake Horgan at third, Tanner Horgan and Ian McMillan on the front end reach Red Deer Curling Classic semifinals where they will meet Winnipeg's Jordon McDonald for a spot into the championship game. Calvert started the game with hammer, due to qualifying through the B-event, though Epping quickly turned that around with steals in the first and second ends. Epping forced Calvert to a single point in the fourth end, then score two points in the fifth end for a 4-1 lead. After forcing Calvert to another single point in the sixth end, Epping added one more point in the seventh end and ran the Winnipeg side out of rocks in the eighth end for the 5-2 win. In the other quarterfinals game, Jordon McDonald (Winnipeg) defeated Rylan Kleiter (Saskatoon) 6-4, Korey Dropkin (Duluth, MN) defeated Cameron Bryce (Norder, SCO) 5-1, and Matt Dunstone (Winnipeg, MB) defeated Daniel Casper (Chaska, MN) 4-2. Epping will face McDonald, while Duntone faces Dropkin in the other semifinal match, with games going at 12:30 pm Mountain Time (MT). With it being Epping's debut as a player in Red Deer, the team finished 5-2 in the 28-team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Epping defeated Johnson Tao (Edmonton) 6-4, then won 6-2 against Riku Yanagisawa (Karuizawa, Japan). Epping went on to lose 5-4 against Dropkin, responding with a 8-2 win over Yusuke Morozumi (Karuizawa, Japan). Epping won 6-5 against Casper to advance to a B-Qualifier game where they lost 8-3 against Dunstone to drop into a C-Qualifier game. Epping responded with a 7-3 win over Thomas Scoffin (Whitehorse, YK) to advance to the playoff round. |
