The #9 World-Ranked Dunstone, backed by BJ Neufeld at third, Colton Lott at second and Ryan Harnden at lead, won in 2022. "Unfortunately, BJ can't play due to a prior commitment", Dunstone announced ahead of the event. "E.J. Harnden will join us in Red Deer, stepping in for us at second for this tournament." Lott will step into the third position for Dunstone. EJ won Olympic gold in 2014 with Ryan and more recently won back-to-back Briers with Brad Gushue(St. Johns, NL), before being released from the team in October. EJ has been practicing regularly at the YNCU Curling Centre in Sault Ste Marie, preparing for future opportunities. Dunstone did not initially include the Red Deer Curling Classic on this season's schedule, though some hot and cold results have left the need for additional world ranking points. Dunstone most recently competed in the Co-op Canadian Open, reaching the quarterfinals. Throughout round-robin, Dunstone suffered losses to Brad Jacobs (Edmonton, AB) 4-2 and Bruce Mouat (Stirling, SCO) 6-3, with their two wins coming against Mike McEwen (Saskatoon, SK) 8-4 and Rylan Klieter(Saskatoon, SK) 8-3. Their 2-2 record was good enough to get them a rematch against McEwen in the tiebreaker round, winning 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Dunstone lost a 6-3 decision to Scotland's Bruce Mouat. Dunstone received a bye in the first round of this 24-team triple knockout format, and faces Daylan Vavrek of Sexsmith, Alberta in their opening game at 4:30 pm Mountain Time (MT). Vavrek won X-X over Edmonton's Ryan Jacques in the opening draw Friday. The championship final goes Sunday at 3:30 pm MT. |
