Skrlik doubles up on Schwaller in Oakville final rematch

Winning their first three games out of the gate at 'The Shorty,' Kayla Skrlik and her team of Margot Flemming, Ashton Skrlik and Geri-Lynn Ramsay faced familiar opponents Team Xenia Schwaller in Friday morning action.

On Monday, Schwaller's Swiss side got the better of Skrlik in the final of the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard, winning 7-6. This weekend, the Albertans were looking for some revenge as they tried to become the first team to qualify in Cornwall.

Starting with the hammer, Schwaller and her team of Selina Gafner, Fabienne Rieder and Selina Rychiger began by blanking the opening end. They were then forced to take a single in the second end after a perfect freeze by Skrlik on her last.

With no rocks in the house in the third end, Skrlik seized the opportunity to split a tight center guard on her last rock, allowing her team to count two points from the end. They then forced the Swiss to a single once again in the fourth, tying the score at two all.

After being forced themselves in the fifth end, Team Skrlik regained their two-point advantage in the sixth by stealing a single point. Attempting a split for two, Schwaller's final rock was too heavy and did not curl enough, gifting the Calgary rink the steal on a measure.

The Swiss got one back in the seventh end, but it wouldn't be enough as in the eighth, Skrlik secured the win with a soft-weight takeout shot, counting two and winning the game 6-3.

AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic - Draw 9 - Xenia Schwaller vs Kayla Skrlik:

With their fourth win secured in Cornwall, Skrlik's rink becomes the first to qualify for the seven-team playoff round beginning Saturday. In their final round robin game, the team will face Korea's Gim Eun-ji (2-1) at 11:00 AM ET Saturday, looking to cap off an undefeated round robin run.

Team Skrlik began the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic with a 9-6 win over Kayla MacMillan (Victoria, BC). They then won 10-4 over Carly Howard (Toronto, ON) and defeated Hollie Duncan (Woodstock, ON) 7-3.

Now at 1-2, Schwaller's rink will have to win out to keep their playoffs hopes alive. Later today, the team will play BC's Kayla MacMillan (1-1) at 8:00 PM ET before closing out the round robin Saturday at 2:00 PM ET against Ontario's Hollie Duncan.
