St-Georges Debuts New Squad at the Shorty
Team Laurie St-Georges (Photo: Michael Burns/Curling Canada) back out on the ice to start the Shorty Jenkins Classic on Thursday, showing off their new lineup for the first time. By: Meredith McCullum Laurie St-Georges and longtime second Emily Riley will be sticking together for the upcoming season. Jamie Sinclair, who joined the team in the 2023-24 season, will be continuing at third. The team has brought Lisa Weagle, former member of Team Rachel Homan and then Jennifer Jones, at the lead position to solidify the lineup. Weagle, a two-time Olympian and World Champion, had left competitive play in 2022, but was still very active in the curling community. She played mixed doubles with John Epping, she has been heavily involved with the Sandra Schmirler foundation, specifically their youth scholarship program and she served as the Canadian Chef de Mission for the Youth Olympic Games last year. In an interview with CBC speaking on her decision to join the St-Georges squad, Weagle said, "I think the test for me the last couple of years is if I say yes to something, I need to feel excited about it," "To me, this is a team that's already really good and they are ready to take the step to the next level." St-Georges, whose team was ranked 20th at the end of the 2023-24 season, said of the addition, "Lisa is such a skilled athlete and she understands the game so well," "We were looking for a player who can bring some experience but also skills and be a sweeping asset to the team," "It was a no brainer for us." The St-Georges rink, out of the Glenmore Curling Club, sit in the middle of the pack at the Shorty Jenkins Classic with a 1-1 record through two days of play. They defeated Team Huerlimann of Switzerland 8-3 in their opener before falling to Rachel Homan's squad in a tight 6-3 loss Thursday night.
