Germans On The Rise

Marc Muskatewitz (photo: World Curling) has his Fuessen-based squad into playoffs going undefeated through Oslo Cup round-robin.

A strong early season start brought the young German team of Benny Kapp, Felix Messenzehl and Johannes Scheuerl into contention on the World Curling Team Rankings last season, leading to a fifth-place finish at the LGT World Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Currently #22-ranked, the team is on the verge of breaking into the Top 20 with another strong start.

Muskatewitz reached the quarterfinals at the Baden Masters two weeks ago, falling 8-6 to Niklas Edin, a tough loss that saw the Germans give up a steal of two in the final end.

The team has bounced back strong this weekend at the Oslo Cup, winning their opening game 8-3 over Switzerland's Jan Iseli, then taking a 6-2 decision from Sweden's Fredrik Nyman and winning 7-5 over John Shuster of the United States.

Muskatewitz won 8-3 against Norway's Kjetil Bjoerke in their final game to win their pool and book a place in Sunday's quarterfinals.

Muskatewitz will play Czechia's Lukas Klima, Edin faces Switzerland's Yves Stocker, Marco Hoesli (Switzerland) will play Elias Hostmaelingen of Norway, and Nyman will play Magnus Ramsfjell on the other half of the playoff bracket.
