MacMillan Opens at Euro Super Series
Victoria's Kayla MacMillan takes the reigns after Clancy Grandy stepped away over the summer. MacMillan threw third stones for Grandy last season, with Lindsay Dubue and Sarah Loken on the front end, started last season at #11 on the World Curling Team Rankings. Early season struggles saw the team reach the playoffs only four times before Christmas, and this failure to advance beyond the quarterfinals dropped the team well out of Grand Slam contention into the second half. A win at the Mercure Perth Masters saw the team get off to a great start in the second half, riding this success to a BC Scotties title and their first appearance at the Scotties National Championship. Grandy finished 5-3, just missing out on the playoffs after losing a head-to-head tiebreaker to Manitoba's Kate Cameron. After announcing for this season that the team would return intact, Grandy later announced she would be stepping away. MacMillan moved into the skip role and recruited Sarah Daniels to join the team at third. Daniels has been away from curling since 2020, with the shortened pre-pandemic season being her last in the competitive game. Daniels won three BC Junior titles, skipping her team to the Canadian final in 2016, where she lost to Nova Scotia's Mary Fay and again in 2019 (with MacMillan at Third and Loken at Lead), losing the last game to Alberta's Selena Sturmay. MacMillan opens play at the Euro Super Series on Wednesday, August 21st again Astrid Pfluegler of Austria, following up with a game against Italy's Stefania Constantini on Thursday. MacMillan rounds out the competition with two games on Friday, playing Scotland's Fay Henderson in the morning and Laura Watt in the evening. All games take place at The Peak in Stirling, Scotland, the home training centre of the British Curling programme. |
