By Meredith McCullum Hometown hotshots team Sturmay out of the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton, Alberta are proving that they came to play in Calgary. They came out of a difficult pool A in first place with a 7-1 record. Selena Sturmay, along with lead Paige Papley and third Danielle Schmiemann, are in their debut Scotties. Dezaray Hawes joined the team this season, moving from BC and bringing two Scotties worth of experience with her. Despite being new to the big stage Sturmay has been a force all week, winning her first six games in a row, including big names in Einarson, Lawes and McCarville. The team lost a close back and forth battle to Newfoundland's Stacie Curtis in their penultimate game, but they would bounce back nicely to beat BC's Corryn Brown 8-5 and close out round robin action. Jones, who is competing in her final Scotties after the announcement of her retirement a week ago, looks to bounce back after a loss to Northwest Territories Galusha in her last round robin game. Team Jones made it to the final in the 2023 Scotties, and have hopes of going all the way this year. Jones has made it clear all week that she is here to enjoy the moment and have fun with her teammates in her final Scotties appearance, regardless of the outcome. With a direct bye to the page playoff on the line, both teams are sure to come out firing and fans will be treated to a fun back and forth battle. |
