Homan Wins Co-op Canadian Open
![]() Switzerland's last rock slid an inch deep giving Rachel Homan the steal and her 15th Grand Slam of Curling title on Sunday in Red Deer. Homan with Tracy Fleury at third, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes on the front end scored one point on their rock in the back four foot in the extra end to win 5-4 over Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni, who came into the final game undefeated on the weekend. Homan takes home the $38,000CDN first place cheque along with 75.000 world ranking points, while Tirinzoni receives $34,000CDN and 55.000 world ranking points for their second place finish. After a first end blank, Homan stole 1 in the second end to take an early lead, then forced Tirinzoni to a single in the third end. After a blank end, Homan scored a single the fifth end to extend lead to 2-1, after which Tirinzoni responded in the sixth end scoring 2. Tirinzoni capitalzed on some mistakes by the Homan team getting a steal in the seventh end to hold a 2-point lead into the final end. Homan made a double takeout with her last stone in the eighth end to force the extra end.
In the semifinals, Homan defeated Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones 8-3 and Tirinzoni defeated Kerri Einarson of Gimli 6-5. Einarson won $26,000CDN, while Jones won $18,000CDN along 42.500 ranking points each for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Jones defeated Anna Hasselborg of Sundbyberg, Sweden 6-5 in an extra end, Homan defeated Eunji Gim of Uijeongbu, South Korea 6-3, Tirinzoni defeated Eunjung Kim of Gangneug, South Korea 8-5, and Einarson defeated Satsuki Fujisawa of Kitami, Japan 5-3. Homan finished 3-1 in the 16-team round robin pool qualifying round. In their opening game, Homan defeated Kate Cameron (Winnipeg) 6-3, then went on to lose 6-5 against Kim. Homan responded with a 7-3 win over Isabella Wrana (Sundbyberg, Sweden) and then won 8-3 against Delaney Strouse (Traverse City, Michigan) in their final qualifying round match. |
