Greg Smith posts 8-ender at Atlantic Tour stop

Greg Smith of St. John's score abd 8-ender on Friday at the Atlantic Superstore Monctonian Challenge.

Smith with Chris Ford at third, Zach Young and Zack Shurtleff on the front end lost their opening game to Carter Small of Fredericton by a 7-5 score. In game two, their opened scoring one against Colton Steele of Dartmouth. From there, the wheels came off for the Nova Scotia side.

In the second end, Smith stole two points, going on to steal the 8-ender.

The Atlantic Superstore Monctonian is a tour stop that earns teams ranking points on the World Curling Federation World Team Rankings, where Smith currently ranks 70th overall and Steele comes in at #152 overall.

It happens in competitive curling where you still try something to score and credit to Steele for making an attempt to score versus just avoiiding the 8-end count.

There have been past instances, where Kelly Scott scored an 8-ender on Cathy King during the 2006 Players' Championship Grand Slam in Calgary and Tyler Tardi has turned the trick twice, scoring 8 at the Golden Wrench in Arizona and at a tour event in British Columbia. Brad Jacobs scored an 8-ender in the semifinal of the Northern Ontario Provincials.

Smoth has posted a 15-13 reconrd on the curling tour this season, reaching the semifinals at the Stroud Sleeman Classic in Ontario as well as the Challenge de Curling Desjardins in Quebec to add alongside thier finish at the Rick Rowsell Classic at home in St John's.

Smith missed the playoffs twice, not making Sunday at the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard in Ontario and the Stu Sells 1824 Halifax Classic in November.

Smith next plays Trent SKanes of St. John's on Saturday morning at 8am Atlantic Time as they battle through the B-side event in the 16-team triple knockout qualifying round. In this format, the tournament is about winning three games before you lose three games and if you can accomplish that you book a placce into the 8-team single knockout championship round.

Sunday's Final goes at 3 pm Atlantic Time.
