Koe Into Playoffs at Nufloors Penticton


Calgary's Kevin Koe (Photo: Michael Burns, Curling Canada) stole two in the extra end to win 5-3 over Jeff Richard of Kelowna on Saturday evening at the Penticton Curling Club.

Koe with Tyler Tardi at third, Jacques Gauthier and Karrick Martin on the front end improved to 28-10 on the season, finishing with a 4-1 record in round-robin pool play. John Shuster of Duluth, Minnesota finished undefeated at 5-0 in their pool.

Richard, with Richard Krell stepping into the skip role this weekend opened scoring two in the second end and maintained control for much of the game. Koe was held to a single point in the third enbd, then team traded singles in teh fourth and fifth ends.

After a blank in the sixth end, Koe stole a single point in the seventh end to even up the score. In the eighth end, Koe manage to hide three rocks under cover on the centre line, forcing Krell into a very difficult draw to score. Krell's last stopped on the tee-line but fail to curl enough giving Koe the steal and the win.

Koe has enjoy his time at the Nufloors Penticton Curling Classic, with this week's edition being his 7th appearance, posting a career record of 32 wins and 12 losses, winning in 2017.

In their opening game, Koe defeated Riku Yanagisawa (Karuizawa, Japan) 6-3, then won 7-2 against Wylie Eden (Kelowna, BC). Koe went on to lose 4-3 against John Shuster (Duluth, MN), with the Americans stealing a point to win that game. Koe responded with a 7-2 win over Jason Montgomery (Victoria, BC) on Saturday morning, leading into the final qualifying round match against Richard.

Koe's position in Sunday's playoff round is to be determined yet, with 12 teams reaching the next round. Four teams will receive a direct berth into the quarterifnals, played at 7:30 pm Pacific Time, with eight teams playing at 3:30 pm in the Round of 12 playoffs. One round of preliminary games remain at 8:30 am with Tiebreakers possible at Noon.

Semifinals and the Final will go on Monday.
