Lawes Gets Bronze at Karuizawa International

Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes (Anil Mungal, GSOC) won 7-4 over Sayaka Yoshimura to win the bronze medal at the Karuizawa International Curling Championships in Japan.

Lawes with Selena Njegovan at third, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin MacCuish on the front end opened scoring with a single point, then after Yoshimura scored two for a early lead, Lawes scored tow in the third end, then stole two more in the fourth end for a 5-2 lead. After holding Yoshimura to a single point, Lawes got two more points in the sixth end. Yoshimura got one back in the seventh end, but was unable to add any extra points in the final end.

Lawes improved to 23 wins and 16 losses on the season with the win while Yoshimura dropped to 52-18. Lawes' finish is the fourth time this season the team has reached the semifinals, reaching the final four at the Pointsbet Invitational in September, at the Insitu Players Open in October and the Pumps and Pressure Red Deer Curling Classic in November.

Lawes finished 3-0 in the 8-team qualifying round, reaching the semifinals on Saturday evening where they lost 7-2 to Ikue Kitazawa. Kitazawa went on to defeat Korea's Eunjung Kim 7-6 in Sunday's Final.

In their opening game, Lawes defeated Miyu Ueno (Karuizawa) 6-5, then won 6-4 against Yoshimura and 7-1 against Youbeen Park (Seoul, Korea) in their final qualifying round match.

Lawes has a career record of 10 wins and 2 losses in 2 appearances at the Karuizawa International, winning in 2014 playing with Jennifer Jones.
