Nadine Scotland wins Avonair Cash Spiel


Nadine Scotland (Calgary, AB) wins the Avonair Cash Spiel, defeating Jodi Marthaller (Calgary, AB) 7-6 at the Avonair Curling Club in Edmonton, Canada. Scotland with Heather Jensen at third with Rebecca Konschuh and Heather Rogers on the front end take home the $2,400CDN first place cheque along with 20.422 world ranking points, while Marthaller receives $1,500CDN and 16.046 world ranking points for their second place finish.

Marthaller opened the scoring stealing 2 in the first end, then forced Scotland to a single in the second end. Marthaller scored 2 more in the third end, then added a steal in the fourth end to take a 5-1 lead. Scotland began the comeback scoring 3 in the fifth end, then forced Marthaller to a single in the sixth end. Scotland scored a single in the seventh end, then stole 2 in the eighth end to sneak out the 7-6 win.

In the semifinals, Scotland defeated Ashton Simard (Edmonton, AB) 7-2 and Marthaller defeated Nicky Kaufman (Edmonton, AB) 6-3. Kaufman and Simard earned $1,000CDN and 12.399 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Scotland defeated Holly Scott (Calgary, AB) 7-1, Marthaller defeated Zi-Xin Wang (Harbin, China) 7-6, and Simard defeated Marla Sherrer (Lacombe, AB) 5-4. Scott, Sherrer, and Wang earned $600CDN along with 8.752 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes.

Scotland went 3-0 in the 14 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Scotland defeated Krysta Hilker (Edmonton, AB) 9-2, then won against Lindsay Makichuk (Edmonton, AB) 6-3, and Simard 7-5 in their final qualifying round match.
