Cameron With Comeback Win at Icebreaker Challenge

Winnipeg's Kate Cameron (photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) returns to Manitoba for 2023-24, scoring two in the final end to win 5-4 over Morris' Shaela Hayward.

As the top seed in the event, Cameron with Meaghan Walter at third, Taylor McDonald at second and Mackenzie Elias at lead debuted against the lowest ranked team in the field to begin, a young junior team curling out of the Morris Curling Club.

Hayward and her team of Keira Krahn, Rylie Cox and India Young started with hammer, surrendering a single point steal to the experienced Cameron team. Hayward scored a single in the second end, then took a 2-1 lead with a steal in the fourth end.

Cameron scored one in fifth end, then took the lead back in the sixth end with their own steal. Hayward came back with two points in the seventh end to once again hold the lead, 4-3 in to the final end.

In their next games, Cameron faces two American opponents, playing Miranda Scheel of Fargo on Saturday at 10am CT and Sarah Anderson of Minneapolis at 2pm CT.

Cameron and McDonald plays last season with sisters Casey Scheidegger and Jessie Haughian, while Meaghan Walter and Mackenzie Elias had a breakout season in 2022/23 with Abby Ackland and Sara Oliver. Scheidegger has taken on the role as coach at the University of Lethbridge curling program while Haughan now plays with Jessie Hunkin of Spruce Grove, Alberta.
