Brad Gushue wins Swiss Cup Basel
![]() Brad Gushue (St. John's, Canada) wins the Swiss Cup Basel, defeating Thomas Ulsrud (Oslo, Norway) 5-2. Gushue with Mark Nichols at third, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker on the front end take home the $18,048CDN first place cheque along with 58.050 world ranking points, while Ulsrud receives $9,024CDN and 45.610 world ranking points for their second place finish. Starting with hammer, Gushue scored 1 in the first end, then forced Ulsrud to a single in the second end. After a blank end, Gushue scored 2 in the fourth end to extend their lead to 3-1. After another blank end, Ulsrud was forced to a single the sixth end, with Gushue adding 2 more points in seventh end en-route to the 5-2 win. Jaap van Dorp (Zoetermeer, Netherlands) defeated Peter De Cruz (Geneva, Switzerland) 5-4 in the Bronze medal game. van Dorp won $5,156CDN, while De Cruz won $3,867CDN along 35.244 ranking points. In the semifinals, Gushue defeated van Dorp 11-3 while Ulsrud won 5-3 over De Cruz. In the quarterfinals, Gushue won 5-3 over Niklas Edin (Karlstad, Sweden), van Dorp defeated Aku Kauste (Hyvinkaa, Finland) 7-4, De Cruz knocked off Greg Drummond (Stirling, Scotland) 7-4 and Ulsrud won 5-4 over Bruce Mouat (Edinburgh, Scotland). Kauste, Drummond, Mouat and Edin earned $2,578CDN along with 24.878 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes. Gushue went 4-0 in the 32 team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Gushue defeated Christian Bangerter (Bern, Switzerland) 7-3, won against Patric Mabergs (Skelleftea, Sweden) 4-1, then won against Kyle Smith (Perth, Scotland) 9-5, and then defeated De Cruz 9-3 in the A-Qualifier game to reach the playoffs. |
