Shannon Birchard wins Colonial Square Ladies Classic
![]() Shannon Birchard (Winnipeg, MB) wins the Colonial Square Ladies Classic, defeating Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg, MB) 8-6 at the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Birchard with Nicole Sigvaldason at third, Sheyna Andries and Mariah Mondor on the front end take home the $7,500CDN first place cheque along with 44.421 world ranking points, while Jones receives $4,500CDN and 34.903 world ranking points for their second place finish. Starting with hammer, Birchard scored 2 in the first end, but Jones responded in the second end scoring 3. Birchard scored a single in the third end, forced Jones to a single in the fourth end when Birchard dealt the deciding blow by scoring 4 in the fifth end to take a 7-4 lead. Birchard forced Jones to a single in the sixth end but a steal in the seventh end cut the lead to one going into the final end where Birchard scored a single to lock up the 8-6 win and first major title for the young Manitoba team. In the semifinals, Birchard defeated Allison Flaxey (Caledon, ON) 7-5 and Jones defeated Anna Hasselborg (Sundbyberg, Sweden) 5-2. Hasselborg and Flaxey earned $3,500CDN and 26.970 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Birchard defeated Un-Chi Gim (Gyeonggi-do, Korea) 8-2, Jones defeated Satsuki Fujisawa (Kitami, Japan) 6-4 in an extra end, while Hasselborg defeated Amber Holland (Regina, SK) 6-1 and Flaxey defeated Robyn Silvernagle (North Battleford, SK) 7-5. Silvernagle, Holland, Fujisawa and Gim earned $2,000CDN along with 19.038 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes. Birchard went 3-0 in the 16 team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Birchard defeated Holland 7-3, then won against Ashley Howard (Regina, SK) 6-1, and defeated Jones 4-2 in the A Qualifier to reach the playoff round. |
