![]() With a 10-8 victory over Team British Columbia in Draw 5, Thomas Scoffin's Team Yukon finds themselves with a 1-1 record at the 2023 Tim Horton's Brier in London, Ontario. By: Dylan Chenier Thomas Scoffin and Team Yukon picked up their first win of the 2023 Tim Horton's Brier on Sunday afternoon in London, defeating Jacques Gauthier's Team BC 10-8 in Draw 5. It was Team BC who struck first with an impressive steal of three in end number one after Scoffin started with the hammer. Team Yukon responded in the second with a single point. After blanking in the third end, Gauthier scored two in four and stole one in the fifth, taking a rather substantial 6-1 lead heading into the break. While some may have assumed it would be smooth sailing for Gauther and Team BC in the second half of Sunday's draw, Scoffin's team wasn't ready to throw in the towel just yet. Coming back in six, Team Yukon scored a much-needed three points, cutting BC's lead to two. A steal of three by Yukon in the seventh end would put Scoffin up 7-6 for his first lead of the game. Despite conceding six points in two ends, Team Gauthier was able to reclaim their lead in end number eight with their second deuce of the game, putting the team up 8-7 with just two ends to play. Scoffin answered right back in nine with his own deuce, taking a 9-8 lead heading into the final end of play. Down by one in ten, Gauthier was looking to draw for a single point on his last shot, in the hopes of sending the game to an extra end. Unfortunately, the skip was heavy on his draw weight, allowing Scoffin to steal one and the victory. With their 10-8 win now in the books, Team Yukon evens their record to 1-1 early on at this year's Brier. Scoffin's rink- with third Trygg Jensen, second Joe Wallingham, and lead Evan Latos- dropped their first game in London on Saturday night against Team Quebec. Yukon's next contest is scheduled for Monday morning as they take on Karsten Sturmay's Wild Card #3 rink in Draw 7. Meanwhile, Sunday's defeat marked the second straight loss for Jacques Gauthier and Team BC, as the rink still looks for its first-ever Brier victory. The team from Victoria will look to add a win to their 0-2 record when they take on Brendan Bottcher and Wild Card #1 on Monday afternoon. In other Draw 5 action, Brad Gushue and Team Canada got by Team New Brunswick (Jones) 13-9, Quebec (Asselin) defeated PEI (Smith) 7-4, and Brendon Bottcher downed Mike McCewen's Team Ontario 10-8. After five draws, Team Bottcher leads the Pool B standings at 3-0, with Ontario, Quebec, and Canada all in a three-way tie at 2-1. With their victory over BC, now Team Yukon sits in sixth place in the pool. At the end of the round-robin, the top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs. The 2023 Tim Horton's Brier continues Sunday night At the Budweiser Gardens, with Draw 6 set for 7:00 p.m. ET. Live SCORES, STATS, and STANDINGS can be found at www.CurlingZone.com |
