Silvernagle captures Saskatchewan Scotties

Robyn Silvernagle defeated Nancy Martin in the finals of the 2023 Saskatchewan Scotties on Sunday afternoon.

By: Dylan Chenier

North Battleford's Robyn Silvernagle is headed to her third national Scotties Tournament of Hearts after she defeated Martensville's Nancy Martin 8-4 in the championship final of the 2023 Viterra Scotties Provincial Championship in Estevan, SK.

Team Martin opened the scoring with a single point in the first end, after starting with the hammer. Silvernagle- with third Kelly Shcafer, second Sherry Just, and lead Kara Thevenot- answered right back in two with a deuce to lead 2-1 early on. The rink from North Battleford would add a single point to their tally in the third end with a steal of one.

Down by two in the fourth end, Team Martin was again forced to settle for a single point, giving the hammer back to Silvernagle with her team up 3-2. The two-time Scotties participant added two more to her lead in the fifth end, as her team secured its second deuce of the draw.

Down 5-3 coming back from the break, Martin's rink was looking for a multiple-point end in the sixth, unfortunately, the skip would once again be forced to settle for a single point, trailing 5-3. Silvernagle added one more to her lead in the seventh end with a single point.

In eight, Nancy Martin's squad was forced to take a single point for the fourth time in the game, giving the hammer back to Silvernagle who held an impressive 6-4 lead with just two ends to go.

The storyline in the ninth was nothing new for either rink, with Silvernagle capitalizing on strong shot-making from her entire team to pick up another deuce, this time to lead 8-4. The tenth end would eventually see Silvernagle run Martin out of rocks, allowing her team to secure the Saskatchewan provincial Scotties title.

With the win, Silvernagle is now set to advance to her third national Scotties Tournament of Hearts, after representing Saskatchewan in 2019 and 2020. Sunday's victory also marked Silvernagle's first win of the tournament against Nancy Martin, after the team North Battleford dropped two consecutive contests to Martin's rink earlier in the event.

After losing to Martin 9-2 in the third round of the A-Side on Thursday, Silvernagle then dropped to the B-Side of the event's triple knockout format, where she would go on to win her next three consecutive matchups, before falling to Martin in the 1v2 Page-Playoff game.

Despite a rather lopsided defeat in the first game of the page playoff, Silvernagle would rebound in time to beat Sherry Anderson during Sunday morning's semi-final, before securing a victory against Martin in Sunday's Championship match.

With the win, Silvernagle and company will now get set to represent the province of Saskatchewan at the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kamloops, British Colombia. This year's Scotties will mark Silvernagle's third appearance at the national championship.

At the 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Silvernagle took home the bronze medal after putting up an 8-3 record throughout the round-robin and championship pool. Silvernagle will be hoping to secure a medal of a different colour when this year's Scotties Tournament of Hearts gets underway on February 17.
