Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing of Barrie defeat Laurie St-Georges and Felix Asselin (Monreal) 8-2 in GOLDLINE Valleyfield Mixed Doubles Final. 16 teams competed from Friday until Monday at the Valleyfield Curling Club in Salaberry-de-Valleyfeild, just southwest of Montreal, part of the Goldline Quebec Mixed Doubles Tour organized and run by Robert Desjardins. Desjardins puts in countless hours organizing tournaments throughout Quebec with the dream of developing a strong competitive circuit in the province. Quebec is home to one of the top young team in Asselin/St-Georges and the Quebec Tour can be attributed to making it easier for teams to compete. For Jones and Laing, the competition was a late replacement for two players with an open weekend between Grand Slams. The pair have competed in Ottawa at the first Mixed Doubles Super Series event as part of the wave of players starting to take Mixed Doubles more seriously. Starting with hammer, Jones/Laing scored 3 in the first end, then added a steal of 3 in the second end, blowing open the game. St-Georges/Asselin got 2 back in the third end, then forced Jones/Laing to a single in the fourth end to take one last shot with hammer, The gamble failed, with Jones/Laing stealing another point for the 8-2 win. In the semifinals, Jones/Laing defeated Desjardins and his daughter Emilie 8-6. The pari are another highly ranked Quebec team on the World Team Rankings through opportunities to compete in the sport. St-Georges/Asselin defeated Amber Gargul/Leandre Girard 8-5. Jones/Laing finished 3-0 in round-robin pool. In their opening game, Jones/Laing defeated Aline Fellmann/Chris Kovalchuk 11-2, then won 13-1 against Genevieve Frappier/Michel Briand (Montreal, QC) and 11-2 against Amelie Maheux/David Maheux (Longueuil, QC) in their final qualifying round match. |
