Ramsfjell wins Champery Masters

Norway's Magnus Ramsfjell won 5-4 over Wouter Goesgens of the Netherlands in Sunday's final.

By Frank Roch.

It took an extra end, but Team Ramsfjell, with Martin Sesaker at third, Benkik Ramsfjell at second and Gaute Nepstad at lead won their first event of the new season at the Curling Masters Champery with the win over Goesgens of the Netherlands, who had won the Champery event back in 2019.

The victory but an exclamation point on an excellent week for the team from Lillehammer, who went 3-1 in the round-robin, losing their only game of the week to Italy’s Team Ribotta in the final round-robin draw.

Team Ramsfjell started their playoff push with a convincing 7-1 win over Team Jungen of Switzerland of Italy, including a steal of three in the 7th end that put the game away.
The semifinals against Team Stocker remained close until the 5th, when the Norwegians scored five on their way to a 9-6 victory.

In the championship game, Ramsfjell met Team Gosgens of the Netherlands, who had only lost one game throughout the event. Both teams reached the final with the help of big ends in their previous games, but there were no big ends to be had in the final as the teams were involved in a back-and-forth affair. Neither team took control of the game until Team Ramsfjell stole one point in the 7th and held the Dutch foursome to one in the 8th to gain the hammer for the decisive extra end.

It has been a solid start to the 2022-23 season for Team Ramsfjell; they have qualified for the playoffs in three of their four events, reaching the semifinals in the Oslo Cup and losing the final of the Stu Sells Tankard to world and Olympic champions, Team Edin of Sweden.
Team Ramsfjell has been slowly making its way up the rankings this season. They were ranked 22 at the start of the event in Champery after starting the current season ranked 26th. This team has progressed nicely over the past 12 months after starting the 2021-22 season ranked 52nd in the world.
