Schwaller Wins Again

Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller wins second title, winning Curling Stadium ACS Leduc Major Final 5-4 over Reid Carruthers.

For Schwaller, who has Benoit Schwarz throwing fourth stones and Sven Michel and Pablo Lachat on the front end, the new combination has paid off well for the team.

After winning last weekend's Curling Stadium Martensville International in Saskatchewan, the winning streak continued in Leduc with the title at the Curling Stadium Alberta Curling Series MAJOR, presented by Global Machine & Supply.

Schwaller opened scoring with two points in the second end, then stole another point in the third end.

Carruthers got two points back in the fourth end, then two more in the sixth end to tie the game.

In the seventh end, Carruthers couldn't generate the offence needed to prevent a blank end, and with both ticks made in the eigth end, Schwarz made the open draw for the win.

Schwaller went 7-1 through the 24-team triple knockout event. In the semifinals earlier Monday, Schwaller stole the extra end on Toronto's John Epping, while Carruthers won 5-2 over Winnipeg's Ryan Wiebe.

Schwaller left his former team, now skipped by Michae Brunner, while Schwarz and Michel came over from the former Peter De Cruz team.

The 21-year-old Lachat came over from Noe Traub's team, a well-regarded front-end player that has found himself on the top-ranked Swiss team.

Schwaller takes home the $8,500 first prize while Carruthers takes home $5,500 in prize money.

For Schwaller, the two wins give them a big head start in the 4-event WCF World Team Ranking points chase for the berth into the Le Gruyere European Curling Championships in Sweden.
