By: Cameron Sallaj After battling through three tough games Monday in Martensville, Team Clancy Grandy won the 2022 Curling Stadium Martensville International. The team, with Clancy Grandy, Kayla MacMillan, Lindsay Dubue, and Sarah Loken qualified for the playoffs as the third seed with a 4-1 record and had to win consecutive three games to claim the championship. First, the team played the Jennifer Jones rink, ranked tenth in the world, which was being skipped by Mackenzie Zacharias for the quarterfinal match. After giving up two in the seventh end to lose control of the lead, Clancy Grandy executed a double takeout in the eighth end to count three and eliminate Team Jones. The Vancouver based rink then took on South Korea's Gim Eun-ji who came in as the eighth best team on the WCF rankings. Team Grandy had a strong start with a steal of three in the second end, eventually opening up a 5-0 lead and going on to an 8-4 win over the Korean team. Then in the final, the team had their best game of the day against reigning world champions Silvana Tirinzoni. After taking two in the first end, the Grandy rink stole singles in ends two, three, and four to go up 5-0 halfway through the game. Tirinzoni finally got on the board in five with one, but it was too late for the Swiss rink as Grandy put two more on the board in six for a 7-1 lead, which was followed with concession by Team Tirinzoni. For their win, Team Grandy takes home the $10,000 CDN first place cheque along with 41.250 world ranking points while the Tirinzoni rink receives $5,000 CDN and 30.250 points for second place. The final was a rematch of the Summer Series final last weekend in St-Felicien, Quebec with Tirinzoni taking that event title with a 6-4 win over Grandy. In the round robin, the Grandy rink began with a 7-4 win over Ashley Howard (Regina, SK) and then won 8-7 over Daniela Jentsch (Fussen, GER). The team then beat the Tirinzoni rink 5-3 and Lorraine Schneider (Saskatoon, SK) 7-4 before losing their final round robin match against Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg, MB) 5-2. They then won their three playoff games Monday to claim the first place prize. Watch the replay of the women's final: |
