Wills/Springer win Best of the West Doubles

Sam Wills and Garret Springer of Regina won 7-6 in an extra end over Kelsey Rocque and Danielle Schmieman on Sunday morning.

The doubles format the SGI Canada Best of the West had some twists to the rules and the event experimented with 6 rocks instead of 5, giving both players a chance to throw the same number of stones.

The event also featured same-gender teams in their own pools, with the men and women facing each other for the first time in the final.

Wills and Springer stole a single point in the first but gave up two points in the second end, then a steal in the third to fall behind 3-1.

Wills and Springer tied the game in the fourth end, then stole singles in three straight ends to lead 6-3 in the final end. A strong end from Rocque and Schmiemann got them three to force an extra end, but that was as close as they would get.

Wills and Springer defeated Evan van Amsterdam and Gregg Hamilton of Edmonton 6-5 in the semifinals on Saturday evening, while Rocque and Schmiemann won 8-0 over Taylor Reese-Hansen and Cierra Fisher from BC.
