Carey Announces New Team for 2022-2023

Two-time Scotties champion Chelsea Carey (Picture: Curling Canada) has announced her new lineup for the 2022-23 season, as the skip joins forces with some familiar names.

After announcing that her current team would be heading in new directions at the end of the 2021-22 season, Chelsea Carey has solidified her plans ahead of the next Olympic cycle.

For the 2022-2023 season, Carey will skip a new squad consisting of Jolene Campbell, Liz Fyfe and Rachel Erickson.

Campbell is a familiar name and face for Carey, as the two currently compete together on Carey's team in Saskatchewan. The Saskatoon native made her Scotties debut in 2010 as an alternate on Amber Holland's rink. The team would return in 2011, picking up their first national championship title.

2016 saw Campbell make her skipping debut at the Scotties in Grande Prairie, an event that saw Team Saskatchewan finish the round-robin in sixth place with a record of 6-5.

Also sticking with Carey is Mayfield's Rachel Erickson, a Brandon, Manitoba-born curler who will move up to lead position after serving as Carey's alternate this season.

Erickson is an accomplished junior curler who won gold at the 2020 World Juniors in Krasnoyarsk as fifth on Mackenzie Zacharias' Team Canada.

Together in 2021-22, Carey, Campbell, and Erikson curled alongside Stephanie Schmidt and Jennifer Armstrong out of Saskatchewan, with the team making it to the 2022 Scotties in Thunder Bay as a Wild Card rink.

Rounding out the new lineup is second Liz Fyfe, who will be making the move from Tracey Fleury's team this offseason.

Fyfe, a Winnipeg native, has appeared in five Scotties Tournament of Hearts, first as a member of Keri Einarson's team and most recently as second on Tracey Fleury's East St. Paul rink.

While next season will see Fyfe join a new lineup, she will be curling alongside a skip she has considerable experience with. At the 2021 Scotties in Calgary, Carey filled in at skip for Team Wild Card #1, while Tracy Fleury sat out due to COVID concerns.

Carey returned to Team Fleury at the 2021 Tim Horton's Curling Trails in Saskatoon, where she served as an alternative for the rink on route to their second-place finish.

"I'm beyond excited with the team we've built for the upcoming season," Carey said in a statement posted to Facebook. "We looked around at the changes happening and tried to figure out what made the most sense moving forward. When you have the chance to add a player of Liz's caliber, you have to jump on it. Everyone is looking forward to the next quad and we're no exception with our blend of youth and experience."

The new foursome has not yet announced what province they will be curling out of, however, Manitoba appears to be the most likely destination. Carey, Erickson and Fyfe were all born in the province, with the skip and second having extensive experience competing for buffalos throughout their career. If the team decides to play out of Manitoba, Campbell would serve as the rink's import player.
