By: Dylan Chenier After twelve seasons as Jennifer Jones' third, Winnipeg's Kaitlyn Lawes is ready to take the reins as skip of her own team. It was announced today that Lawes will lead a brand new team from 2022-23 onwards, with Selena Njegovan at third, second Jocelyn Peterman, and lead Kristin MacCuish. "I am so excited for this new adventure with Team Lawes. We are a young team with a plethora of knowledge, and I cannot wait to see what we accomplish together," said Lawes in a statement on social media.
The news marks an amalgamation of sorts between the old Jones rink as well as Tracy Fleury's team, two of the most powerful squads in Manitoba curling over the last few years. Lawes and Peterman have competed together for the last four years on the Jones rink, with the two winning the 2021 Olympic Trails in Saskatoon and representing Canada at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. While Lawes is known most for her duties at third over the past decade, she does have experience in the skip position having led her own team to two Canadian junior titles in 2008 and 2009. Selena Njegovan and Kristin MacCuish have curled alongside each other since 2009-10, first as members of teams Calvert and Birchard, before joining forces with Kerri Einarson in 2013. As members of Team Einarson, Njegovan and MacCuish competed in two Scotties Tournament of Hearts, including a second-place finish in 2018. In the most recent quadrennial, Njegovan and MacCuish competed on Tracey Fleury's rink from East St. Paul, making three Scotties and finishing runners-up at the 2021 Olympic Trials. |
