Black bests curling mentor at Scotties

Nova Scotia's Christina Black (Photo: Curling Canada) scored a decisive 9-3 victory over her curling mentor, British Columbia's Mary-Anne Arsenault in Draw 6 in Thunder Bay.

In a battle between former teammates, student Christina Black and her team out of the Dartmouth Curling Club overpowered teacher Mary-Anne Arsenault and her new squad out of the Kelowna Curling Club for their second win at this year's Scotties.

Before moving west to British Columbia, Arsenault curled with Christina Black for numerous seasons, guiding her team to three Scotties appearances in 2015, 2018 and 2020. Following Arsenault's departure, Black took over the team as skip and led them to an undefeated record at the Nova Scotia Scotties in December, securing the team's spot at this year's national championship. Arsenault was also able to lead her team to victory in the British Columbia Scotties playdown, setting up the match between the two former teammates.

The Nova Scotia team of Black, third Jenn Baxter, second Karlee Everist, lead Shelley Barker, alternate Carole MacLean and coach Stuart MacLean didn't begin the game on the right foot, however, giving up a steal of one to Arsenault in the first end. It was almost five for Nova Scotia, but Black wasn't able to connect on her final runback attempt.

The Black rink didn't let their multiple points get away from them, however, as in the very next end Christina Black was able to score five points to take the early 5-1 lead. On her last shot, Arsenault wasn't able to fully freeze to a Nova Scotia stone, leaving Black a double to score six points. She made the double, but caught one of her back stones on the way by, picking up five. BC was only able to respond with one in the third, making the score 5-2 NS.

British Columbia was able to cut into Nova Scotia's lead by one more in the following end, stealing a single point. Facing three on her last rock, Black attempted to navigate through a port to secure her single point. She grazed off of a top BC stone, but was able to roll into the four-foot to cut the Arsenault rink down to one. Nova Scotia got their single back in the fifth end to head to the break up 6-3.

In the next three ends, Nova Scotia stole three consecutive single points to secure the victory 9-3. Arsenault had an opportunity in the eighth end to execute a double to potentially count three, but she hit the first stone too thin and rolled underneath the other. The win improved Nova Scotia's record to 2-1 in the event while Arsenault's BC team are now winless in three games played.

Black's rink have Monday off before they hit the ice Tuesday morning against Ontario's Hollie Duncan. BC continues to look for their first win and will play Quebec's Laurie St-Georges Monday afternoon at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.

In other games during Draw 6, Manitoba's Mackenzie Zacharias improved to a 2-0 record by downing the Yukon's Hailey Birnie 12-3. Manitoba took four in the first end and never looked back en route to their impressive victory. Yukon now sits at the bottom of the group at 0-2.

Team Canada's Kerri Einarson also kept their perfect record intact with an 8-5 win over Quebec's Laurie St-Georges. Canada are now in sole possession of first place in Pool B with a 3-0 record while Quebec drop their first game and are now 2-1.

In the last game, a late steal of three helped Alberta's Laura Walker in picking up a win 9-7 over Ontario's Hollie Duncan. Facing two in the tenth, Walker made a pressure tap around a guard to secure her single point and the win. Alberta moves to 2-1 while Ontario are winless in three games played.

Action from the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts began Friday, January 28 and will run through February 6th at the Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Games throughout the week will be streamed on TSN. The next draw is set for Monday, January 31 at 9:00 AM Eastern Time with Wild Card #1's Selena Njegovan against Wild Card #3's Emma Miskew in the featured game.
