Carey to play for first Saskatchewan Scotties title

Chelsea Carey (Photo: Curling Canada) and her new team have secured the first spot in the Saskatchewan provincial final.

By: Cameron Sallaj

In a wild 1 vs. 2 page playoff game that swung back and forth in momentum, Chelsea Carey's Regina based squad edged Penny Barker's Moose Jaw rink to secure the first spot in the provincial final.

Carey got on the board first with a deuce in the first end to take an early lead, however, Barker responded immediately with a two of their own to level the score. Carey took the lead again in the third end with a single point to go ahead 3-2.

After applying lots of pressure in the fourth end, Team Carey extended their lead to 5-2 following a steal of two. Penny Barker faced four Carey stones completely buried on her final stone and made a runback to limit the damage to just two. Team Barker got within one with a deuce in the fifth to trail 5-4 at the break.

With Penny Barker coming heavy on her last rock of the sixth end, it allowed Chelsea Carey to play a perfect soft-weight tap to score a big three points and take a four point lead. Barker stayed resilient, however, and got two back in the seventh to only be down two. Carey got one in the eighth to make it a 9-6 game heading into nine.

In the ninth, following a few uncharacteristic mistakes from the Carey rink, Penny Barker was left with a tap back to score four and take her first lead of the game. Her stone, however, just didn't curl enough but she did manage to tap the Carey rock far enough to tie the game at nine all heading into the tenth.

Facing a Barker stone in the back four foot on her final shot of the game, Chelsea Carey drew the button to secure the 10-9 win and her teams place in the provincial final. It was the highest scoring game of the entire event.

After the game while speaking with CURLSASK, Chelsea Carey said "That last one was all Steph (Schmidt), that was an incredible sweep. I thought for sure that was light but she did an amazing job."

Carey with third Jolene Campbell, second Stephanie Schmidt and lead Jennifer Armstrong now await the winner of the semifinal to determine who they will play in the final.

The semifinal game will be played between the Penny Barker rink and Team Amber Holland Sunday morning in Assiniboia. Holland stayed alive in the fight for the provincial crest with a narrow 6-5 win over defending provincial champions Robyn Silvernagle. The semifinal game will be played at 10:00 AM Central Time while the championship final will be contested at 3:00 PM Central. Both games will be streamed on the CURLSASK YouTube page.

The 2022 Viterra Saskatchewan Scotties are currently being held January 5th through 9th at the Assiniboia Curling Club in Assiniboia. Games throughout the week are being streamed on the CURLSASK YouTube page and through SaskTel Max. The event was held in a triple knockout bracket that qualified four teams for the playoff round.
