MacMillan into BC Scotties Final

Team Kayla MacMillan (Photo: CURL BC) has won the 1-2 page playoff game and has qualified for the final of the 2022 BC Scotties.

In a rematch of the A Qualifier game from Thursday morning, Kayla MacMillan and her team of third Jody Maskiewich, second Lindsay Dubue and lead Sarah Loken prevailed over Kelowna's Mary-Anne Arsenault to clinch the first spot in the women's provincial final.

MacMillan and her team from the Vancouver Curling Club got on the board first with a steal of one to open the 1 vs. 2 page playoff game Friday night. Arsenault, however, was quick to respond, taking a big three points in the third end and an early 3-1 lead.

The Victoria based team bounced back quickly with a single point in the fourth end and a steal of one in the fifth to tie the score heading into the break.

Looking at four MacMillan counters on her final shot of the sixth end, Mary-Anne Arsenault calmly drew her stone into the four foot circle to avoid giving up a big end and instead take a one point lead. MacMillan knotted the score up once again at four in the seventh with a draw for her single point.

Team MacMillan would take the lead for the first time since the second end with a steal of one in the eighth. Arsenault attempted an in off on her final stone to score multiple points, but she hit the rock to thin. Following a blank in the ninth, Arsenault was forced to a single in the tenth end to tie the score at five all. MacMillan took the hammer into the extra end.

On her last rock of the extra, Kayla MacMillan made a delicate soft-weight hit to remove an Arsenault stone from scoring position and secure the 6-5 win. The victory secured MacMillan's first trip to the BC Scotties final as this is her first time playing in the event.

Talking with CURL BC after the game, MacMillan commented that "We started off definitely slow especially myself but the team really kept me in it. It felt really gritty I'm not gonna lie but we made a promise to each other that we would never give up on ourselves or each other so I knew that it didn't really matter what the score was we were just gonna keep ourselves in it and make some shots and hope for a good outcome."

Team MacMillan will play the winner of the semifinal game in the provincial final Sunday morning at 9:00 AM Pacific Time. The game will be streamed live on the CURL BC YouTube Page.

Team Arsenault will have another chance to reach the provincial final as they drop into the semifinal game where they will go up against Team Sarah Wark from Abbotsford. Wark knocked out defending provincial champion Corryn Brown 8-7 in the 3 vs. 4 game to stay alive in Kamloops. The semifinal game will go at 2:00 PM Pacific Time.

The BC men's and women's provincials are currently being held January 4th through 9th at the Kamloops Curling Club. Games throughout the week are being streamed on Curl BC's YouTube Channel and Facebook Page. Both events were played in a triple knockout format which qualified four women's teams and four men's teams for the playoff round.
