By: Dylan Chenier The playoff field is now set at the 2022 Manitoba Scotties in Carberry, as the field of twelve teams has been reduced to just three rinks left with a chance at the provincial title. Altona's Team Zacharias has advanced straight to the finals, after finishing the championship round with a 6-2 record. The Zacahiarias foursome, with third Karlee Burgess, second Emily Zacharias, and lead Lauren Leninitine, won all three games in the championship round, defeating Teams Watling, Felury, and Jones. A victory in Sunday's final would secure Zacharias' rink their second-consecutive Scotties Tournmanet of Hearts birth, their first as Team Manitoba. At last year's Scotties in Calgary, the team qualified as one of three Wild Card entries. The rink entered this week's provincial championship as the number-two seed, meaning that their success has been anything but a surprise. Zacharias will await the winner of Sunday's semi-finals, a draw that pits Kristy Watling against fellow Assiniboine-based rink Team Kaitlyn Jones. Like Zacharias, both Watling and Jones finished the championship round with 6-2 records. The playoff rankings were determined as a result of their head-to-head results. It was Team Watling that emerged as victors when the two teams met during the round-robin. Team Jones will be looking to even the score on Sunday and advance to the championship final. Both Watling and Jones are playing for their first appearances at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Although, Kaitlyn Jones is no stranger to the national championships, having competed in three Canadian Junior Championships. One rink that is noticeably absent from the playoffs is Team Tracy Fleury. The East St. Paul-based squad finished the championship round in fourth-place, with a 5-3 record, just missing out on the playoffs. As the event's height-seeded team starting the week, Fleury's results are somewhat of a surprise, especially seeing as the rink is currently the number-one team in the world. Despite some strong victories this week in Carberry, Fleury faced some tough competition with all of their losses coming to the three playoff-bound teams. While the result is certainly a disappointment for Fleury, the rink will more than likely have another chance to qualify for this year's Scotties. Given the team's high national and world ranking, they are almost guaranteed to earn one of two births in the Scotties Wild Card game, a match that will see two teams face off for the final spot in the national championship. The playoffs at the 2022 Manitoba Scotties run Sunday at the Carberry Plains Community Centre. The semi-finals are set for 10:00 AM CT, while the finals go at 4:00 PM CT. Both games can be watched live across the country on Sportsnet. SCORES and BRACKETS at www.curlingzone.com |
