By: Dylan Chenier Tanner Horgan, the defending SuperSpiel winning skip, booked his Kingston-based team a spot in the quarterfinals, after Steve Irwin 8-6 in a C-Side qualifier on Sunday night. The draw opened with Irwin scoring two in the second end, after blanking in the first Team Horgan, competing this weekend with third Jake Horgan, second Wes Forget, and lead Scott Chadwick then took the lead scoring three points in the third end. However, Irwin answered right back in the fourth, putting up an impressive four points on the board. The rink from Brandon, Manitoba led 6-3 at the break. In the fifth end, Team Horgan would start to regain control by scoring two, cutting into Irwin's lead 6-5. Horgan's rink would then put up three consecutive stolen points, ultimately taking the win 8-6 after eight ends. The victory officially puts Team Horgan into the quarterfinals, which are set to take place Monday at 12:00 PM CT. With their loss, Team Irwin has officially been eliminated from the triple knockout event. Horgan's quarterfinal opponents will be decided after play wraps up on Sunday night. Monday could be a busy day for Team Horgan, if they are to win their second event of the 2021-22 season. After the morning quarterfinals, teams will be back on the ice for the semis at 3:30 PM, followed by the championship final which is set for 7 PM CT. This week in Morris, Team Horgan put up a 4-2 record in the triple knockout. After opening with two wins on the A-Side, the rink dropped their A-qualifier match to Team Hartung on Saturday afternoon, followed by a B-Side loss to Team Violette. Horgan bit back into the win column with a victory against Riley Smith on Sunday afternoon, which was followed by the C-Side qualifier win against Irwin. The 2021 DEKALB SuperSpiel continues Monday at the Morris Curling Club, with teams competing for a $33,800 purse. The Championship Final is set for Monday at 7:00 PM CT.
