McEwen Picks Up Third Trials Win
| Team McEwen (Picture: Curling Canada) moved to 3-1 at the Olympic Trials, after picking up a win on Wednesday morning. By: Dylan Chenier The 2021 Tim Hortons Curling Trials are well underway at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon. And while Newfoundland's Brad Gushue leads the way at 5-0 after five rounds of play, things are quite close in the middle of the pack, as teams chase one of three playoff births. Manitoba's Mike McEwen kept his playoff hopes alive by defeating Tanner Horgan's Ontario rink 6-5 in Draw 10 on Monday morning. The draw got underway with McEwen forcing Horgan to one in the first end after the Kingston-based rink started with hammer. After a blanked second-end, Horgan returned the favour by forcing McEwen to one in the third. After Horgan settled for one in the fourth, McEwen opened things up a bit in the fifth-end, scoring an impressive three points. The Manitoba rink took a 4-2 lead heading into the break. In the sixth end, McEwen would add to his lead, picking up a single stolen point. Horgan's struggles with the hammer continued in the seventh end when he was once again forced to a single. After McEwen picked up one more in the eighth end, he took a 6-3 lead with just two ends to go. Horgan's streak of single-ends continued in the eighth, scoring just one, trailing 6-4 heading into the tenth. In the final end, Horgan was left sitting two after his last shot, while McEwen would leave one of Horgan's stones in the rings, it wasn't enough to tie things up, with McEwen Taking the win 6-5. With the victory, McEwen now moves to 3-1 and sits in fourth place in the standings, behind Kevin Koe's Alberta rink. The two teams are set to face off Draw 12 on Wednesday night, a game that could have major playoff implications. McEwen is 0-2 against Koe this season, with their most recent meeting coming at the 2021 GSOC Masters, where Koe won 7-6. Koe will be coming off a 9-7 victory against defending Brier champions Team Bottcher on Wednesday morning. In other Draw 10 action, Brad Jacobs defeating Jason Gunnlaugson 7-5 and Brad Gushue kept his unbeaten streak alive, getting by Matt Dunstone 9-4. The 2021 Tim Hortons Curling Trials runs through Sunday evening in Saskatoon. SCORES and BRACKETS at www.curlingzone.com |
