Anderson wins Sutherland Icebreaker
| Saskatoon's Sherry Anderson needed an extra end to win over Ashley Howard in the Craven Sports Services Icebreaker Final in Saskatoon. Anderson, with Nancy Martin at third, Chaelynn Kitz at second and Breanne Knapp at lead scored a single in the extra end to defeat Ashley Howard (Saskatoon) 8-7 in the Championship game. Howard opened the scoring in the first end with a hit against three Anderson counters. Anderson returned with two in the second end, drawing into the eight-foot for the second point. In the third end, Howard made a hit-and-roll under cover with her first, then a double-takeout with her last to score three and take a 4-2 lead. In the fourth end, Anderson split the house early, and the teams traded hits to leave the game tied at four at the halfway point of the game. In the fifth end, the momentum began to change as Howard slid a draw for three through the rings, then in the third end, it took a Howard double-takeout with her last to limit Anderson to the hit for three. After a blank in the seventh end, Anderson, leading 7-6, forced Howard to a single point with a freeze on her last. Howard could not move shot stone far enough for two, sending the game to an extra end. Anderson reached the final with a 6-5 win over Jessica Mitchell (Regina) and Howard, with teammates Kourtney Fesser, Krista Fesser and Kaylin Skinner, who won 6-0 over Brett Barber of Biggar in the semifinals. Anderson advanced to the A-qualifier game with an 11-0 win over Jacquie Swiderski (Prince Albert) and then a 7-1 win over Sherry Just (Saskatoon). Anderson opened the scoring with a single in the A-qualifier game, but then Howard scored three in the second end, adding a steal of two and then three more for the quick 8-1 win. Anderson bounced back in the B-qualifier with an 8-1 win over Just to book their placement in the playoff round. REWATCH THE FINAL: |
