Howard, Holland go undefeated to win Sask Tour Stops

Saskatoon's Ashley Howard won Sutherland's Northern event while Amber Holland won the Southern spiel played in Moose Jaw.

Howard, with sisters Kourtney and Krista Fesser throwing the middle four stones and Kaylin Skinner throwing lead stones won 7-2 over Biggar's Brett Barber in Sunday's final, played at the Sutherland Curling Club in Saskatoon.

After giving up a steal in the first end, Howard came storming back with 4 in the second end to jump out to the early lead.

After trading singles, Howard then stole two in the fifth end to get an early conclusion to the championship game.

Howard won 7-3 over Regina's Jessica Mitchell in the semifinals, while Barber won 9-5 over Sherry Just (Saskatooon) to reach the final game.

Howard won 10-1 over Patty Hersikorn (Saskatoon) to open play on Friday, then went on to win 7-6 over Saskatoon's Sarah Hoag and 5-4 against Just. Howard finished pool-play with a 7-6 win over Robyn Silvernagle (North Battleford) to head into the playoffs without a loss.

This past weekend's southern stop played at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre in Moose Jaw, where Holland and her team of Kim Schneider, Karlee Korchinski and Debbie Lozinski scored a single point in the eighth end to win 4-3 over Stasia Wisniewski in the final.

Holland opened the scoring with two in the second end, then stole a point to lead 3-0 through the first half. Wisniewski, with Chantel Martin at third, Amanda Kuzyk at second and Sheri Martin at lead got on the board with a single in the fifth end.

Wisniewski continued to apply pressure, getting steals in the sixth and seventh end to even up the scoreboard into the final end.

Holland reached the final with a 9-3 win over Skylar Ackerman (Saskatoon), while Wisniewski won 8-2 over Lorraine Schneider (Regina) in the semifinals, after dropping Michelle Englot (Regina) 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Ackerman won 6-3 over Stephanie Schmidt (Regina) in the other quarterfinals matchup.

Holland went undefeated, receiving a direct bye into the semifinals, finishing with seven wins on the weekend.

Holland opened pool-play with an 8-4 win over Jade Bloor (Regina), then won 7-1 against Skylar Ackerman and 9-1 over Elisa Soika. Holland finished the round-robin with wins over Wisniewski (8-4) and Moose Jaw's Penny Barker (7-3) to qualify for the six-team playoff round.
