Deschenes Upsets Jones in Stu Sells Toronto Opener

17-Year Old Emily Deschenes (Photo: WCF/Alina Pavlyuchik) won 6-4 over Jennifer Jones in the opening draw of the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard, held in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

Deschenes, with Lindsay Dubue (21) at third, Grace Lloyd and Michaela Robert on the front end fell behind 4-1 after four ends after going heavy on a draw in the second end, then giving up two points in the fourth end.

In the second half, the young team from Manotick, Ontario came to life, making a run back to score three and tie the game in the fifth end, then stole to take their first lead in the sixth end.

After a mutually-played blank in the seventh end, draws by Deschenes on her last two shots left Jones with a difficult pick-out just to score.

Deschenes stole the end for the 6-4 win.

Deschenes (1-0) faces Abby Deschene of Sudbury in the morning draw, then follows up with two games Sunday, 1:30 pm against Thea Coburn and then at 8:30 pm against Lauren Mann.

Jones (0-1) will play Cathy Auld of Thornhill at 10 am and Thea Coburn at 5 pm on Saturday, finishing the round-robin Sunday against Sierra Sutherland of Ottawa.
