Niklas Edin Wins Baden Masters

Sweden's Niklas Edin (photo: Baden Masters) won 8-1 over Jaap van Dorp of the Netherlands to win the Baden Masters title Sunday.

Edin with Oskar Eriksson at third, Rasmus Wrana and Christoffer Sundgren on the front-end, took control of the game against the Dutch early to win the opening tournament of the World Curling Tour season, held in Switzerland at the Baden Curling Club.

Edin scored a single in the first end, then stole two points in the second end when the Dutch came up short on the draw. Another steal of two in the third end, and the rout was on as van Dorp and his team of Wouter Gosgens (fourth), Laurens Hoekman (second) and Carlo Glasbergen (lead) just ran out of gas after coming into the game undefeated.

"Overall a great feeling to be back competing again on tour after such a long and weird break," said Edin.

"Some more training going into this first event and we were highly motivated so it feels great to get the win here in Baden."

Edin takes home the 8,000 Swiss Francs for the win, their third Baden Masters title since the formation of this team following the 2014 Olympics. The first title with Kristian Lindstroem, while Rasmus Wrana joined the team for the second and now third titles.

Edin defeated Switzerland's Peter De Cruz in the semifinals earlier this morning to advance to the final, stealing three in the last end to win 7-3.

After a slight hiccup in the first end, Edin caught a break in the second end when Benoit Schwarz's last rock over-curled, missing the hit leaving Edin the draw and an open two points. A steal in the fourth end turned in their favour, and the Swedes controlled the game from there.

In the other semifinal match, van Dorp scoring three in the second end, then stole the third end to lead Sixten Totzek early, but the German side scored a single, then stole the fifth and sixth ends pushing the game back to even.

After a blank in the seventh, van Dorp fourth stone-thrower Wouter Gosgens calmly draw the four-foot to score the winning point in the eighth end.

In the quarterfinals, De Cruz defeated countrymate Andrin Schnider 7-3 and Totzek knocked off Italy's Joel Retornaz 6-5.
