Stern Steals Schweizer Cup Opener

Competitive curling has returned to the ice in Switzerland as Oberwallis' Elena Stern (photo by Anil Mungal) opened their season with an extra-end 8-7 win over Raphaela Keiser (St Moritz), completing their comeback after trailing 5-1 after 5 ends.

">Stern calls the game and throws third stones, with Briar Huerlimann throwing fourth stones, Lisa Gisler at second and Celine Koller at lead had a breakout year last season, showing they're a real threat for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Stern won their first Swiss National Championship along with winning last year's Schweizer Cup, along with two major women's Tour events in the Canad Inns Classic in Canada as well as the International Bernese Ladies Cup last January finishing the season with a 50-29 record on the season.

Irene Schori (Langenthal) won 9-1 over Celine Schwizgebel (Gstaad-Thun) while Nora Wuest (Wetzikon) defeated Sarah Mueller (Biel-St. Gallen) 8-6, scoring 3 in the final end to start with a win. Silvana Tirinzoni (Aarau) had the opening-round bye in the 7-team round-robin field.

The Schweizer Cup is held each year as Switzerland's response to the Canada Cup, typically held in December.
