Marc Pfister wins German Masters
![]() Marc Pfister (Adelboden, Switzerland) wins the German Masters, defeating Kyle Smith (Perth, Scotland) 4-3 in an extra end at the Curling Club Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. Pfister with brother Enrico Pfister at third, Raphael Maerki and Simon Gempeler on the front end take home the $6,889CDN first place cheque along with 31.788 world ranking points, while Smith receives $4,592CDN and 24.977 world ranking points for their second place finish. Starting with hammer, Smith opening scoring with 1 in the first end, then after a blank end, Smith stole the third end for an early 2-0 lead. After blanking 2 ends, Pfister finally got on the board getting a big 3 in the sixth end to lead to 3-2. After another blank end, Smith scored a single the eighth end to send the game to an extra end where Pfister scored a single for the 4-3 win. In the semifinals, Pfister defeated Yannick Schwaller (Bern, Switzerland) 6-5 in an extra end and Smith defeated Alexander Baumann (Baden-Baden, Germany) 6-1. Baumann and Schwaller earned $2,679CDN and 19.300 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Pfister defeated Greg Drummond (Stirling, Scotland) 6-1, Smith defeated Yves Hess (Zug, Switzerland) 7-2, while Baumann defeated Steffen Walstad (Oppdal, Norway) 8-7 and Schwaller defeated Joel Retornaz (Trentino, Italy) 7-6 in an extra end. Drummond, Walstad, Retornaz and Hess earned $1,531CDN along with 13.624 ranking points for their quarterfinal finishes. Pfister went 2-2 in the 20 team round-robin pools qualifying round. In their opening game, Pfister lost 7-1 to Cameron Bryce (Stirling, Scotland), then responded with a 5-4 win over Patric Mabergs (Skelleftea, Sweden), losing their next game to Baumann 5-2, then responded with a 8-2 win over Jaap van Dorp (Zoetermeer, Netherlands) in their final qualifying round match. |
