Sweden to face Canada for LGT World Men's Championship

John Shuster's United States will take on Ross Whyte's Scotland in the bronze medal game on Saturday morning at 09:00.

Semi-finals

After defeating Switzerland 9-8 in an extra end in their morning qualification game, United States progressed to face Sweden in the semi-finals. Sweden had directly qualified for the semi-finals after their first placed finish in the round robin.

The sides were level at 3-3 going into the fifth end break, before Sweden scored two in the sixth to take the lead. The teams traded singles over the next three ends, with Sweden leading 6-5 going into the tenth end with last stone advantage. However, United States forced a steal of one in the tenth to take the game to an extra end.

In that extra end, United States were unable to remove two Swedish counters, giving Sweden a score of two, without having to throw their final stone, for the 8-6 win and a place in the gold medal final.

Canada beat Italy 9-7 in the morning qualification game to progress to the semi-finals where they faced Scotland. Scotland finished second in the round-robin rankings to receive an automatic place in the semi-finals

After the first half, the teams were tied at 3-3. Scotland scored two in the sixth end, but Canada responded with a score of three in the seventh, taking the lead for the first time in the game.

Canada held an 8-7 lead going into the tenth. When Scotland, with their last stone, were unable to clear the Canadian counter. Canada stole a single point for the 9-7 win and secured their place in the gold medal final.
