By Cameron Sallaj It's been smooth sailing so far in Cortina for Canada's Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant. After winning their opening game on Wednesday 10-5 over Czechia, the pair counted two more wins Thursday to sit tied with Great Britain atop the round robin standings. In the afternoon Draw 3, the Canadian pair went up against 2022 Olympic silver and 2018 Olympic bronze medalists Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten of Norway. After stealing one in the first end, Canada took the only multi-point end of the game in the third with a count of two before stealing one in the fourth to lead 4-1. From there, they forced Norway to singles both times they had the hammer while counting one themselves in six to lead 5-3 coming home. In eight, Jocelyn Peterman drew the eight-foot circle for addition point, giving the Canadians a 6-3 win and a 2-0 start to the Games. At night, Peterman and Gallant faced another tough test in Italy's Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner, the reigning Olympic champions. Not only that, but this Italian pair had not lost a game in international competition since 2021, making them one of the front runners to take home the gold again. Despite the threatening nature of the Italian side, this game was over almost immediately, with Canada taking advantage of mistakes by Mosaner to count five in the opening end. For the rest of the game, Italy could not get anything generated, only scoring twice with the hammer while Canada also added two points to their total. In the sixth, Constantini hit and rolled out on her final takeout shot, meaning the end resulted in a blank with the hammer flipping back to Canada. This was enough for the Italians who conceded, giving Canada a big 7-2 win in their third game of the event. Although they have only played two events leading up to the Olympics this year, Peterman and Gallant hold an impressive 12-1 win/loss record on the season, winning the Mixed Doubles Super Series in Moose Jaw and finishing runner-up at the Sherwood Park Mixed Doubles. While they may be one of the teams with the fewest reps heading into the Olympics, their previous experience in both doubles and fours make them a huge medal contender at the end of the week. Next for Canada will be two of their toughest matches as they go against the only other two undefeated teams left in the event. First, they'll face the United States' Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin on Friday before matching up against Great Britain's Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat on Saturday. They will also face tough challenges against Estonia and Sweden before closing out against South Korea and Switzerland. Olympic Mixed Doubles Standings - Draw 4 Great Britain (Dodds/Mouat): 3-0 Canada (Peterman/Gallant): 3-0 The United States (Thiesse/Dropkin): 2-0 Switzerland (Schwaller-Hurlimann/Schwaller): 2-1 Sweden (Wrana/Wrana): 2-1 Italy (Constantini/Mosaner): 1-1 Estonia (Kaldvee/Lill): 1-2 Norway (Skaslien/Nedregotten): 0-3 Czechia (Zelingrova/Chabicovsky): 0-3 South Korea (Kim/Jeong): 0-3 |
